Ways to Clean Your Mattress and Keep the Bedroom Hygiene in Place Amidst the Pandemic

The novel coronavirus has impacted the entire world, and we are continually thinking of hygiene and cleanliness for ourselves and our surroundings. Self-isolation has become the new normal for most of us. Whether it has to do with frequent washing of hands or cleaning every corner of the room, the recent development of OCD on cleanliness is important to stay safe. We are spending most of our time in our houses due to work from home. Corona affected patients are spending their time in the bedroom, self-quarantining and recovering from the virus. In such times it is imperative to keep our bedrooms clean and hygienic.

Let us run through a few ways of keeping our bedroom and mattress clean during the pandemic.

Changing Your Sheets

The virus stays for a day on cotton sheets. Whether affected with corona or not, there is a frequent need of removing the sheets, quilt, comforters, and pillow covers and replacing them with new washed ones. Once the old set is washed and dried under the sun, you can repeat the process with the other used set. This will help you prevent the spreading of germs.

Let the warmth of sun come inside your room

Let the sun rays reach every nook and corner of the room. Vitamin D and warmth plays a crucial role in removing bacteria and germs. The rays being a natural disinfectant will stop the bacteria from settling on the mattress. You can even opt to remove the mattress along with the mattress topper and keep it under the sun in the balcony.

Vacuum up

It is not easy to vacuum up germs and bacteria, but it is always advisable to get rid of it as much as you can before you put it into wash. The minute sticky dust particles that are hidden can be removed with vacuum cleaners. Post that, the heat can be used to kill germs and bacteria from your mattress and sheets.

Regular sanitization of the surface

For regular and quick sanitization of mattress, mattress topper, quilts, comforters and pillow cover, do a few passes with a small garment steamer or any other small steam cleaner on the surface to remove germs, bacteria and dust. In case of a spill of any bodily fluids on cloth during sickness, use a damp cloth with a mixture of water and dish cleaning liquid and rub on it. As a last step, you can use baking soda and leave it on for a few hours (under the sun) before using a steamer or vacuum cleaner. You can also use a hairdryer to soak up excess water from the mattress.

Cleaning ways for different types of mattresses

  • Cleaning a memory foam mattress/orthopedic mattress

It is advisable to use a moderate amount of liquid on memory foam mattress. As foam is a good absorbent material, too much water takes considerable time to dry. You can use vacuum cleaner, borax/baking soda, or powdered washing detergent to clean the memory foam mattress or orthopedic mattress.

  • Cleaning a latex mattress

As latex mattresses are made of organic materials, stemming out from rubber trees, you should avoid water and harsh chemicals. Be very careful and first vacuum the mattress with low heat followed by sanitization and dusting with bicarb soda with a drop of essential oil. You can use vinegar, soda or alcohol to remove stains and then dry it in the room. Avoid sun exposure for latex mattress.

  • Regular preventative action

It is always advisable to take constant measure to prevent germs and bacteria. Try to make a regular habit of putting a mattress cover to protect it from microbes and allergens. This practice will help make cleaning easier faster. Regular preventive measures will not only keep the sickness away but will also save you from dust allergies and many other allergies providing you with healthy sleep. Have a germ-free sleep and a healthy lifestyle, making cleanliness a regular habit.

Given that the threat of Covid-19 is still around, it is important that we ensure that we keep cleaning our houses and mattresses to ensure that they family is always protected.
